In a move to enhance access to justice for children in conflict with the law, Lady Justice Deepa Verma, of Mpigi High Court, transferred the Juvenile Criminal Session to the Naguru Remand Home on Friday, June 13.
The decision to relocate the session was informed by a child-centered approach aimed at minimizing disruptions for juvenile offenders and improving their access to judicial processes. While at the facility, Justice Verma was briefed by the Probation Officer on the key challenges facing juvenile justice delivery, particularly the lack of funding to facilitate witnesses' attendance during trial. She was also informed that many cases are compromised at the point of arrest, where juveniles are often interviewed without the presence of their parents or guardians, an omission that complicates subsequent efforts to locate and involve them during court proceedings.
Despite these constraints, the session achieved notable success. Justice Verma disposed of 12juvenile cases and transferred one case to Wakiso for further handling. As a result, Mpigi Court currently has no pending juvenile cases for trial.
Lady Justice Verma commended the State Attorneys and Defence Counsel on State Brief for their dedication, particularly for physically accompanying her to Naguru to ensure the session proceeded smoothly. She also appreciated the efforts of the Probation Officer and staff at the remand home for their continued care and support of the children in custody.
